According to President Muhammadu Buhari, the oil that has been discovered and is being drilled in Nasarawa State would increase Nigerians’ prosperity and the nation’s overall energy security.

The president said the nearby communities would especially profit from the value created by the exploration and eventual production activities in his virtual message to the official spud-in of the Ebenyi-A Well on Tuesday. The well is situated in the Middle Benue Trough in the Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

Buhari instructed NNPC Limited and its partners to limit the harmful impacts of these oil exploration activities on the environment and to take proper care of them.

To ensure the success of this exploration expedition, he expressed gratitude to the government and residents of Nasarawa State, the host community.

The president remembered that the formal start of drilling operations in the Middle Benue Trough is consistent with continuing efforts to explore natural gas and crude oil in the country’s border basins.

He named the regions where NNPC is expanding its crude oil exploration as the Chad Basin, Dahomey Basin, Anambra Platform, Calabar Embankment, Sokoto Basin, Bida Basin, Benue Trough, and the Ultra-Deepwater Niger Delta.

He claims that “this is in line with the commercial hydrocarbon discoveries in the Upper Benue Trough’s Kolmani Region.

“I am happy to report that efforts are currently being made to bring the Kolmani petroleum finds into commercial production in order to increase the sizeable hydrocarbon assets of the country.

“The significant effort made by NNPC Limited to take advantage of the opportunities on its behalf, he said, is worthy of praise. I congratulate NNPC Limited, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, and other partners for their immense contributions towards making this day and this event possible.”
