Attacks by armed invaders on three communities in Benue State’s Apa Local Government Area reportedly resulted in the deaths of two soldiers and fifteen villager victims.
Locals claim that on Tuesday at around six o’clock, three attacks occurred simultaneously in the communities of Opaha, Odogbo, and Edikwu in Apa LGA.
The bodies of 17 people, including two Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) soldiers, were found in the early hours of Wednesday after security personnel searched the area, according to a local simply identified as Kole.
The locals also revealed to the Daily Trust that one of the dead soldiers was the leader of the squad that engaged the armed intruders while the community was under siege in an effort to drive them out.
Barrister Eche Akpoko, the chairman of the Apa Development Association, confirmed that the community had been attacked on Tuesday night.
When asked for an update at 10:30am, Akpoko said that 10 bodies, including two soldiers, had already been found.
David Olofu, the state commissioner for finance and a native of one of the affected villages, Opaha, told journalists in Makurdi that on Wednesday morning, the bodies of 15 villagers and two soldiers were found.
Olofu stated that at the time of this report, he was en route to the village to evaluate the situation.
Flight Lieutenant DO Oquah, the OPWS spokesperson, stated that he was out of town and unable to comment on the situation.
Because his phone was off, Major Ogundile, the Sector Commander of OPWS in charge of the Apa LGA, was also unable to be reached.
Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Benue Command, SP Catherine Anene, told our correspondent on the telephone that she was not yet aware of the incident.
