The Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Gen. Christopher Musa, has called for the integration of military strategies with diplomatic efforts, community engagements and good governance as ways to address security challenges in the country.
H|e made the call at the opening of the International Security Management Course, ISMC-5, organised by the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, NIIA, held in Abuja on Monday,
The course was organised by the Peace Building Development Consult (PBDC) in collaboration with the ECOWAS Commission with the theme, “Emerging Security and Economic Issues in the ECOWAS Sub-region.”
Represented by the CDS was the Deputy Director of Peacekeeping Operations, Defense Headquarters, Brig.-Gen. Raymond Utsaha. He affirmed that the course displayed a consciousness of the corporate responsibility of other prestigious institutions in tackling insecurity and aligned with the entire society striving to uproot insecurity from Nigeria and the sub-region.
He stated that the rapid evolution in the geo-political landscape and the daring security issues have heightened the importance of effective security management.
He mentioned some of the security challenges to be terrorism, cyber-threats, transnational organised crimes, geo-political tensions, and environmental disasters, amongst others.
“Accordingly, we must also recognise that our approach to these challenges needs to be comprehensive and integrate military strategies with diplomatic efforts, community engagements, and good governance.
“Thus, a sophisticated understanding of both national and international security dynamics in this regard is important,” he stated.
