Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has described his state as being “under siege” following the relentless and heartbreaking killings of innocent civilians, particularly farmers, by armed Fulani terrorists. His remarks came after hosting the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who was sent by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to offer condolences and assure the people of Benue that the Federal Government stands with them.
Governor Alia, in a deeply emotional statement, emphasized the extent of the violence that has plagued Benue communities, with farmers, the backbone of Nigeria’s food security, being forced to flee their ancestral lands. He condemned the situation, stressing that Benue’s lands are “soaked in tears” and its people are grieving.
Speaking about the dire need for intervention, Governor Alia called for urgent and increased support from the Federal Government to end the bloodshed. “We cannot, and will not, normalize this evil,” he declared, pointing to the increasing vulnerability of his people.

In response, NSA Mallam Nuhu Ribadu delivered a message from President Tinubu, reaffirming the government’s commitment to standing with Benue. “This is real evil… We will fight to ensure these murderers are defeated. Benue is number one in food production, and we must protect that legacy,” Ribadu quoted the President, offering a glimmer of hope during a very dark period for the state.
Governor Alia acknowledged the NSA’s visit as a source of hope but underscored the need for concrete action. “The visit gave us hope, but more importantly, it demands action,” Alia stated, reiterating that he would not rest until peace is restored to every inch of Benue soil.
The Governor made it clear that his administration will continue to defend the people of Benue, their land, and their right to live without fear. He promised to remain resolute in the fight to end the killings and ensure that the state’s rich agricultural legacy is preserved.
As Benue State continues to struggle with the violence, Governor Alia’s appeal for action reflects the growing urgency for government intervention to protect the state’s communities and restore peace to its troubled lands.
