A major step toward strengthening justice for displaced communities has been taken in Benue State as Lawyers Alert formally commenced Legal Clinics across Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, following official approval from the Benue State Government through the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA). The clinics will deliver free legal services, rights sensitisation sessions, and targeted support for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). This intervention comes at a time when the state continues to struggle with recurring violence and mass displacement, leaving thousands of families in need of not just humanitarian aid but legal protection. Lawyers Alert noted that while emergency relief often reaches IDPs, issues such as rights violations, exploitation, and the lack of access to justice remain largely unaddressed. The newly established Legal Clinics aim to fill this gap by ensuring that displaced persons—especially women and other vulnerable groups—can seek justice without fear or barriers. Two journalists from The Middlebelt Reporters, Linus Egwu and Joxzy Otor, have completed HumAngle’s intensive fellowship on community journalism and human rights advocacy in Jos. The three-day training equipped participants with skills in conflict-sensitive reporting, SGBV documentation, and accountability journalism to strengthen storytelling across Northern Nigeria.

In late 2024, Senator Abba Moro flagged off the long-awaited Otukpo-Oju road project, promising to improve infrastructure for the Igede people. Yet, months later, no work has commenced, leaving many frustrated. Recently, Igede youth leader Andyson Iji Egbodo and his delegates visited Moro to inquire about the delays, but the senator’s response lacked clarity. One may wonder if the actions and behavior of the Obidients have indeed validated the label of “fascists” given to them by Soyinka. It is interesting to note that the Obidients selectively focused on certain words to form the basis of their defense and attack against Prof. Soyinka, reminiscent of the behavior of fascists.
